Monthly Plotting Post | March

Happy Spring, gang! February was a tough month for a lot of folks in the game, but with warm weather and more sunshine on the horizon, I am so excited for what’s to come! I’m also SO PLEASED to be celebrating the anniversary of our game’s biggest boost in size to date! Even if the circumstances surrounding the Sail Migration weren’t the best, and we had a lot of growing pains in the aftermath of such a large change, we also gained a lot of beloved and engaged community members and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I’m so glad you guys are here and I’m so excited to celebrate the anniversary of our time as a community.

In more game-related news: I don’t know about you guys, but with a major plot event on the way (i.e. Efrain’s downfall in the March event), I could use a little extra time to wrap up my current threads and gear up for the big moment. Merrymeet is one of my favorite recurring events, and I’m excited to give it the time it deserves before a major plot development. Plus we’ve got a new TDM going up toward the beginning of March and a small mingle! As such, I’m going to have the March event be a little bit on the late side this month. I’m thinking either the 23rd or the 28th. Thoughts one way or the other? Drop a comment on the mod toplevel or let us know on Discord!

I also want to use this month’s metaplot section to talk about the game’s future--- the roadmap for the rest of the game, and what the sequel game will look like! It’s still a good ways off (like probably 8-12 months if we’re really efficient), but I want to give folks plenty of time to think about their post-game plans! Plus I’ve had it on the brain.

SPRING TDM

March through May

Originally, we had Pokemon acquisition sequestered to specific periods of time and only specific types, and the reason for this is because we didn’t want them to overwhelm the game. However, over the past year and a half, the concerns we had about Pumpkin Hollow developing a heavy culture around Pokemon that overtook the game never really came to pass--- people generally don’t even fill all their slots, and they are used more as a fun accent rather than a main feature! When last we discussed the Pokemon situation in the server, we had people express that they might like to check out some other types and we’d planned to have them available for Summer and Winter this year, but with the understanding that the way Pokemon are treated by the player base will most likely continue, we’d like to go ahead and offer them year-round with types determined by season, and have divided up all the types into a thematically appropriate season!

For springtime, you’ll be able to find Grass, Fairy, Ground, Bug, and Normal! (Yep, that’s right--- by popular demand, Eevee will be available with this change!) Rather than a special article, available types will now be listed at the top of the Gazette, and the intro article will make a brief note. We are prepared to roll back this change if it doesn’t work out or if it’s undesirable, but the intention is to make it so that everyone will have a chance to get their faves. Catch responsibly! Each character is still limited to 6 Pokemon pals, as we don’t have a PC for you to send them to!

Also on the agenda for spring right now are the player-requested community laundry days, a potluck as an homage to last year’s, as well as the ever-popular speed-dating from last year. (Although this year it’ll be called “Swift Social” to be inclusive of those looking for platonic CR, though it’ll still have opportunities to indicate you’re looking for love.) I’ve also got some plant-themed and fae-themed spookies on the docket for spring that are still in the works, so stay tuned! As always, I’m also open to suggestions!

To celebrate the anniversary of the Great Sail Migration, we’ll be doing a simple mingle event called Then and Now--- post a toplevel to invite other characters to comment leaving their first impressions of yours and how they compare to their current feelings. How have things changed since your character arrived? Whether you’ve been here for a year, the whole game, or just a week or two, enjoy reminiscing with your Pumpkin Hollow pals!

Late March

It’s finally time to take down another Demon Prince! Efrain, the Prince of Sorrow’s Song, is the last thing standing between Prince Aster and becoming heir apparent--- leaving only King Eligos himself as Aster’s final obstacle.

A while ago, Nimbus had mentioned offhandedly the idea of a “day at the opera” event which has lived in my head rent-free ever since, and so it’s off to the opera we go. In Efrain’s attempt at a grand demonstration of his power, he will be transporting the islanders to a grand amphitheater, where his demonic orchestra will perform musical interpretations of each islander’s deepest source of pain, regret, and sorrow--- with the subject themself and their loved ones compelled to play the roles on stage while everyone else is a captive audience. Play out musical renditions of scenes from your past with your CR cast as your loved ones or enemies, catch a moment to chat in the Green Room before or after your performance, or find moments of solidarity from the auditorium seats between songs.

Not feeling the limelight? Take on a role as a member of the stage crew for the show and succumb instead to the despair of endless toil for the cruel and merciless stage manager! Take a seat in the pit and play with the orchestra, feeling every moment of others’ pain by proxy from the music your hands are forced to create. Or get saddled with a job in the concession stand for a different flavor of suffering--- mindless drudgery for an uncaring public. The choice is yours! But get too feisty and face the wrath of the security guards: a shade of one of your own loved ones like the false Ballister that had been created for Nimona.

However, Aster will be taking the beginning of March to prepare his assassins. Have a bone to pick with Efrain? Let me know and the demon-killing effort might recruit you! But anyone looking to get too close to Efrain will have to fight their way through his strange bodyguards, creatures of living glass whose creation Pyotr Stamatin may have to answer for later.

Due to the narrative function of the event, I am unfortunately unable to offer a full opt-out aside from a handwave for this event. But hopefully I’ve created enough alternative ways to enjoy this pity party that you’ll be able to find one that suits you! If not, let me know!

CURRENT METAPLOT

A lot has been going on recently in plot town! Primarily, the discovery that Dr. Elias Coldwood, lighthouse keeper and biologist, has a nascent Eldritch godling in his basement! There are two separate threads about this ongoing, one between Shen Qingqiu, Valdis, and Elias himself and the other between Gerry, Arthur, and John Doe. What is this creature that Elias has created? What are its ties--- and his--- to Nyarlathotep? And who was it that posted Elias’ anonymous bail just in time for him to attend Merrymeet? More details to come!

With all that’s going on in the game’s present day, I wanted to talk briefly about the trajectory for the game’s future as well! Here’s a basic outline of the major plot beats I’m planning to hit, unless something drastic changes:

➼ At the end of March, individuals chosen by Aster will be given the opportunity to kill Efrain. With Mendel dead, Aster will be the last remaining Prince left to succeed Eligos for the Infernal Throne.
➼ Throughout the Spring, fae involvement will become more prevalent. I’m still working out the exact details, but there are plans for Elsie and Olwylder to become more deeply involved in the plot, including a surprise I’m planning with Meghan!
➼ Also during this time, Eligos will be doing more to work on his contingency plan for dealing with Aster, which will involve turning Aster’s Court and Infernal Servants against him, and powering up his own favored and those of his other two sons.
➼ In the late summer, Eligos will make his own last stand, and he will die--- but not without setting things up for Aster’s eventual downfall in the process.
Aster will ascend the Infernal Throne.
➼ Dahlia will officially become a Prince--- and next in line for succession, as Aster has no other children. The Pine Devil’s curse of consumption will cease to be.
➼ With assistance from those that Eligos granted power to, those given boons by goddesses, and her own newly founded Court of Woman Scorned, Dahlia will strike back at Aster and become the new King of Hell.
As the only one left to maintain the contract with Nyarlathotep, Dahlia will break the truce, lowering the barrier!
➼ However, Nyarlathotep will not take kindly to this--- his reaction will remain a surprise for now, but this will launch us into a pre-endgame state where certain tasks must be accomplished to initiate endgame proper. We’re anticipating this taking several months at least.
➼ Once all tasks are accomplished, the final face-off with Nyarlathotep will occur, and the game will end with it finally being possible and safe to leave Marrow Isle. This will initiate our exploration-based sequel game, Emerald Crown! Pumpkin Hollowites will be given the means to leave this world and come back at will.

As we’re building up to the trials that characters will face during these major plot beats, we’re going to be looking at ways to make characters more formidable through items, skills, transformations, canon updates, and more! We’d like to get as many folks in on it as we can and plan as far in advance as possible. We look forward to seeing what cool ideas we can work out with all of you!

We’re also anticipating all of this taking quite some time, so there’s no rush to make major plans right this minute. Additionally, we’re planning to have Emerald Crown be more self-guided in an effort to give ourselves a break from heavy plot. We have more plot-heavy projects to share with you all in the future, and we could use some time to kick back and just play it by ear while we plan ahead! It’s also my plan to run a short-term game alongside Emerald Crown. Harvey, Drake, and I, operating under the name “Team Pumpkin,” have plans to bring you all tons of RP fun for years to come!

PHEW that was a long plotting post--- sorry it’s dropping so late at night for most of you! But we hope you’re as excited as we are to keep going on this adventure together!

Mulcahy has been Eligos-aligned this whole-ass time, and with a boon from Mortanne I would like to see something come into play! And once again I believe he's still one of the only PCs who got a good look at that Funky Book, so those sigils all locked up in the mind of a holy man, if that seems like a fun toy to play with.

I am dead to the world until after May so I probably won't be able to have a direct hand in Efrain's downfall unless we work something genius out, but I would still like for Mulcahy to have some hand in aiding in Efrain's downfall indirectly! :3

okay it is fifty times easier to word dump in a plotting comment so that's what i'm doing

fever would shine the best as the antagonist in anyone's opera, and this is not an exclusive role! make her into your villain, the one you need to get brutal and ugly with, and make her do it more than once. as long as we can oocly coordinate, i have no hard limits with what this will entail. literally please give me the excuse to have her be nasty and awful again. 🥺🥺🥺

on the flip side, for herself, there are a few scenarios i'm tossing about. the strongest comes with a cw: suicide, as it would be dramatically reenacting the fate of Yurgir, only done as an actual tragedy. another would be the fight that ended in her losing her memory, but instead of a true fight scene, it could be enacted as a violent ballet sequence - this one would, however, leave her infuriated and humiliated. third option would reveal to her and others that she murdered her foster parents in her youth and then fled from the scene of the crime. as you can see, actually picking a topic is difficult for me.

she can also be thrown against the glass creatures as a heavy hitter for resisting, but that's a given since she's never made any secret about wanting to tear the princes down

March Sadness plotting (Leon S. Kennedy)

OKAY SO THE WAY I SEE IT we've got two main options for Leon's performance:

1. Leon's No Good Horrible Very Bad Debriefing: That time the CIA picked him up as one of the sole survivors of Raccoon City being bombed into glass after a zombie outbreak, threatened the orphaned child he'd taken on responsibility for, and saddled him with an offer he couldn't refuse. Heavy emphasis on numbness in the wake of an unthinkable tragedy and redirecting all that energy into being really fucking hacked off at the CIA operative coercing him into complying by threatening a twelve year old.
   Roles available would be Adam Benford, the CIA operative, and possibly Sherry Birkin, a girl with the world's deadest parents.
2. The Homoerotic Knife Fight: Leon's confrontation with Jack Krauser, his former commanding officer and mentor, after Krauser turned traitor over the US Government abandoning him and his unit in the jungles of [SOUTH AMERICA] on a covert mission. Krauser does spend the latter half of this knife fight shirtless, though he also has a very gross mutant super-arm at this point too.
   Roles for this one include Jack Krauser, knife and archery enthusiast, career soldier, and Metal Gear Solid boss who wandered into the wrong game, as well as possibly Luis Serra, a scientist who'd been helping Leon until Krauser knifed him in the back.

Those of you who've been around a while may be aware that I have kind of a thing for writing bespoke song lyrics for musical events just such as this, which means if I get any volunteers and they're willing to indulge me I will be writing up an entire script to work from for this event, mark my words. Leon will also be available to understudy for anybody else's acts, so please let me know if you'd like him anywhere.

Additionally, I'd really love for him to see some combat during this event!! He's good at it!! So if anyone would like to help him fend off some glass monsters while the others go in for the kill, please let me know that too!

Wilson gets the dubious honour of being a minor character in his own story, The Enchanted Doll, a highly biased retelling of Queen Charlie's story that exists in Don't Starve Together canon. He plays the Fool, who accidentally kills the wicked and dishonest King (a representation of Maxwell, off-and-on canonmate and former ruler of the Constant) while trying to entertain him, decides he's king now, and gets shut down by the Doll declaring herself queen instead.

Barring a surprise app his only canonmate is Fuelweaver, whose role in the real events got rolled in with Maxwell's for the play (the King kills the Doll with a "magic blast" and the Mirror brings her back to life), so Fuelweaver could play the King or he could play the Mirror because it represents "Them" and that's what would upset him the most. The lead role of the Doll, an ingenue who initially wants to learn magic from the King and then wants to free the Mirror and help it repair itself, and the role of her overprotective sister the Blacksmith, are wide open.

Wilson's also available to understudy for other people's shows!

As you can see, there's something Up With That Guy. During the demon attack on Merrymeet, he was approached by Efrain and accepted the Boon of Glass Hearts; ever since, he has had the ability to pull emotions out of himself or other people and shape them into beautiful glass sculptures, with Efrain is now using as his bodyguards. Pyotr was not aware that he'd be doing this before the event started, but in the state he's in now he doesn't much care.

People who are struggling with their emotions can experience the temporary relief of emotional numbness by allowing him to use the boon on them. On the other hand, if you're looking for more information on the sculptures themselves, Pyotr may be able to shed some light on their existence!

okay, we all know I'm not going to be able to be around a lot, but I'm going to throw things out here anyway:

Mulcahy's big opera is putting on full display his murder of Harry Powell. It's not going to be especially metaphorical or artsy as ballet, because the whole thing here is unadorned truth. I will not be having a single actor in the role of Powell specifically because he is a piece of shit in a fashion that is terribly close to real-world issues... so rather than make any one person a villain, Powell will be a puppet voiced by a chorus. If you want to be part of that chorus spitting vile things at our poor priest, or the chorus of people who find him in the aftermath, feel free to handwave!

Phil's is also getting an opera because I can't Not do this idea. Act 1 begins and ends; cue intermission. Act 1 begins and ends; cue intermission. Ad infinitum, thanks to time warpy wimey stuff, until Phil has to make the choice himself to walk off, and the show can no longer go on. And in this act, he is failing to save someone else, over and over and over. If someone would like to be in this endless ensemble, especially the person who needs to be saved, Hit Me Up.

Once again: I can't do much of any threading right now, much less something as strenuous and coordinated as running the actual opera in a thread, so I'm going to have to just go ahead and write those. BUT, you can catch my characters in the dressing rooms/green rooms after their performances, and if they aren't there or in the audience, Mulcahy can be found under the whip in Stage Crew and Phil in the orchestra pit. Repetition, repetition, that's the key...

hokay let's get this down

Edgar is the only one I have a full plan for: he's getting an opera of his death. Characters already tentatively or firmly cast in this are Valdis as Curtis Everett (leader of the rebels and Edgar's idol), Fever as Minister Mason (representative of the Front's authority), Rambo as Franco the Younger (an enforcer for the Front who deals the death blow), and Nimona as Chan (a child from the Tail section). There are potentially other roles open if anyone wants them, and I'm still figuring out how the opera will be posted -- possibly a groupchat is in order?
Beyond that, there'll be a green room top-level starter, and a possibility that Edgar will be one of the people recruited by Nimona for her battle.

Cassandra may or may not get an opera; if she does it will most likely be her confrontation with her brother Percy on his return to Whitestone. Beyond that, she will be in the orchestra pit, and possibly get a top-level there.

Zivia will most likely not get an opera of her own. As discussed above, she will probably appear in Mulcahy's as an unwilling member of the chorus, and is available for others.

I am going to get at least Edgar's post up before Passover, so help me.

As of this thread, Nimona has her infernal weapon plus instructions from Aster re: killing Efrain. If you want in on the fight, you can assume Nimona recruits you! We don't have to specifically thread her yanking you into the side room. BUT, if you do want a thread with her recruiting you for the fight -- whether you've already got CR or have been looking for an excuse to start new CR with her -- I will 100% happily wildcard her onto your TL. Just point me where to go!

(I'm also going to write up her own opera scene this weekend, which, if you're not planning to TL your character, can serve as another spot to thread with her.)

Because I'm gonna be so busy with Nimona, Gaeta and Radar are largely sitting out this event -- Gaeta will be in the pit providing atmospheric backup vocals, and Radar will be working the ticket booth, able to hear all his friends suffering from afar but unable to do anything about it :)))))) Obviously I'm game to handwave anything with those two; I can also send them to folks' TLs for aftermath threads.

don't look at the date i'm posting this. don't look at it and it can't hurt you. Anyways,

I'm a little late for Efrain's opera plotting and have most of my moving pieces already in motion there, but I thought I'd put this here for other miscellaneous plotting things I need to have down, sectioned off by character! I'm planning to do late spring + early summer opens for little personal plot type things on the side! (Dr. Coldwood will also have his own post, as I want to make sure there's a clear space for the metaplot things going on with him!)

Without further adieu, here's what my guys have going on presently:

Jon Sims
Unfortunately, after some less-than-savory run-ins with demons, avatars, the Discoveries (pending) from Citrus Quest, and the increase in Knowing from the Eye's faint reach, Jon's falling into a little bit of a slope into a new paranoid episode, tangled in feelings of hopelessness and a drive to try to untangle some things, in the hopes that that will make things feel less inescapable.

He's been on a little bit of a back-burner, and intentionally so while I fight off life stuff, but also just generally being sort of guarded and skeptical of friends and loved ones, much less strangers. I'd love to get some things sorted out in the upcoming with some of his close CR to start getting this sorted for him!


Laios Touden
I won't lie - I've been having some trouble maintaining his voice as of late. :[ I'd like to get into a few light things with him to try to get the ball rolling again! To keep from getting into anything that I know runs the risk of burning out on presently, this is going to exclude any particularly deep emotional cuts, as well as any smut.

If anybody's been wanting to have him around and have some light waters to try to tread while I get my ball rolling again, I'd love to hear 'em!


Basira Hussain
Still getting settled in, and starting to make improvements in various Core Relationship Areas after the nightmare and the opera! I'd love for her to get some CR with the other Bizzyboys she's working with (she hasn't gone especially out of her way to hang out with them due to work mode), as well as get her to spend some time with her former Archives workers. Also, with getting back into things, I'd also like for her to have run-ins and talk to people who had her reputation precede her! :]


Hector Monaque
As always, very into any and all CR with him, as this brand of brain-fungus is going hard right now. I've got a more specific thing I'm working on with him, though, that doesn't necessarily have to be CR-based with him!

In a deal with Eligos after the opera, in a low point of helplessness and fear for himself and those he cares about, Hector agreed to earn back his godhood in exchange for sewing trouble among some people in Pumpkin Hollow. He's going to be doing this by employing an old strategy: sending Mean Missives, letters disguised as one person to hurt the feelings of/sew distrust in another!

For this, I'd really like to, similar to how Drake worked with Eligos' deal with Tarantulas, have this not result in any nuclear-bad type of negative CR, nor tank the reputation of the Bizzyboys. He can absolutely be caught in doing so and held accountable for it, I just am not a fan of playing out earth-shattering incidents that can't be mended like that. u_u That being said, the letters can be something that cause somewhat low-stakes kerfuffles, or are something that stay anonymous/chalked up to demon interference for much more severe ones!

For anyone interested, let me know two characters and the type of relationship they've got (example: throwing a wrench in Jon and Martin's relationship with something plausibly dishonest), and who should receive the letter! I'm good to iron out these details to make them more personal for bonus points of working things out, depending on the level of hurt/comfort you'd like to do for the impacted relationship! (There's no set amount of these that need done, so feel free to pitch to me whatever ya like!)


Oleander (The Long Quiet)
As I'm not entirely certain still that I'm keeping Oleander, I'm mostly working on backtagging his old threads, as well as working on something for the opera, time permitting. If he's needed or wanted anywhere in particular, though, feel free to let me know!

Dr. Elias Coldwood | Metaplot ft. The Eldritch Godling In The Basement

Backdated to December, the word's gotten out: Dr. Elias Coldwood, the lighthouse keeper and biologist, has been found to have been tending to an eldritch entity, given the name Glory, who's origin has been revealed through another recently found journal. Recently bailed out from a few-month jail sentence for both this and potential conspiracy with the cult of Nyarlathotep, he's returned to his home, and has assumed care of her once more.

With this angle of the plot, Elias is guarded (as if he hadn't been before), and defensive; interaction directly with Glory will require some establishing of CR with Elias! Save for tolerating his Town Hall appointed constable (Shen Qingqiu), he is very touchy about the situation.

That being said, I would love to establish some CR with him! He will not respond well to direct offers of assistance with Glory, and worse yet to parenting advice, but he'll be tentatively receptive to solidarity and understanding. Presently, he's operating on an assumption that he will be shunned by the community at large, so outreach will be met with wariness at first, but ultimately acceptance. Once there's a level of trust there, he'll begin to be cautiously open with people about her!

On the other side of this situation, Glory is a character that will be played, and is in a strange point in her existence. Having been born of being "planted" in a host with magical abilities, notions about what she was to be, and continuously sustained in a world with a potent magic in and of itself, her development changed from that of the standard-fare offspring of Shub-Niggurath. Instead of being something that only carries the will of the Black Goat, or a vicious monstrosity alone, she is sapient, and slowly developing an understanding of the world around her! She still carries instincts and biological needs of her nature, but much has been changed by the world around her and her means of existence.

As the person she is presently, Glory is skittish and easily provoked, prone to attacking that which is unfamiliar to her. Part of this is fear, and part of it is the insatiable hunger at the core of her being. In a comfortable environment, however, she's got a childlike curiosity about the world around her, and from some ball-park musing on it, is probably somewhere within the age of 3-4 cognitively - she "plays" with things in her cell (some examples being hand-made toys and other ins and odds), tinkers with stones, and when she starts to understand Emeran, can identify herself and others by names! Currently she's struggling to understand things like rules and concepts of distant future, but can be convinced to agree to things like waiting until tomorrow.

I would love for Valdis to get to know Glory better as I feel the two of them can relate on some level and Valdis already feels protective of Glory because of her own history. Valdis can be very patient when she wants to be and is actually really good with kids when given the chance. With her years of knowledge and creativity she probably wouldn't have a hard time answering all the questions a young being might have about the world. It would bring out a much softer side of Valdis that I would like to play with as well.
